Classic account ownership

The Basecamp account owner is the person who originally set up your Basecamp Classic account. The account owner is the only person who can up/downgrade plans, change credit card billing information, and cancel accounts.

How is ownership transferred?

To change account owners, the current account owner needs to go to the Dashboard and click on the “Account” tab:

Scroll down to the “Change account owner” section and choose the person to whom you want to transfer ownership.

Only users in the account owner’s company can be made the new owner. If a person is in another company, you need to move them to the account owner's company first.

The owner can always reach out to the support team or write to support@basecamp.com from the email address associated with their Basecamp account, and we’ll be happy to help transfer the ownership to someone else.

Transferring the account does not remove the credit card from the account. Please contact support if you’d like to remove the card from the account.

What happens when the account owner is unavailable?

It happens — people switch jobs, get laid off, go on extended leave — the account owner may be unavailable for any number of reasons. Still, since our obligation is to the current account owner, we’re unable to transfer the account to anyone else without their permission.

If the account has been frozen due to non-payment for less than a week, we’ll be glad to thaw the account for a week or so, so people can access their work in the meantime.

The quickest route is often to contact the current account owner and ask them to log in and transfer ownership of the account right away from the Account page.

Otherwise, we can also gladly reach out to the current account owner at the email address we have on file and request permission to transfer the account. If it’s a company address and another employee has access to the inbox, the person who receives the email can grant permission to transfer the account. For security’s sake, we can’t transfer the account based on permission granted from any other email address other than the one we have on file.

When none of the above is an option, a court order is required to transfer the account to another user. We will readily comply with any court orders to turn over data to the appropriate party.
